Wavebounce

Summary

Wavebounce is a movement technique that allows you to reverse momentum during a B-Special attack without actually changing the direction you're facing (as compared to a regular B-Reverse, which reverses both momentum and the direction you're facing).  It is performed by first executing a turnaround of a B-Special move, and then B-Reversing it.

This technique can be performed both aerially and on the ground if the B-Special still carries a sliding momentum during your movement (note that some B-Special moves actually halt movement on the ground, e.g. Roy's Double Edge Dance).  Wavebounce does not require custom controls to perform, though the grounded neutral B-Special version demands an incredibly stricter timing as attempting the initial turnaround B-Special involves inputting the directional stick in the opposite direction during the dash to perform, which if not timed precisely will instead initiate the slow turnaround animation (this is not problematic in the aerial version, as inputting the opposite direction while airborne does not actually cause the fighter to initiate any turnaround animation), and if the control stick is pushed too far during the initial turnaround could instead accidentally execute the side B-Special attack or if the timing is off execute a B-Reverse.

Wavebounce and especially the neutral B-Special grounded version can be achieved more easily and consistently with a custom control scheme called C-Bounce.

Requirements
  • Must use a B-Special attack that carries momentum when performed in the air or on the ground
  • Grounded Wavebounce requires very strict timing and execution that can be simplified by using a custom control scheme with C-Stick set to Attacks/Tilts (aka the C-Bounce technique).
How To Perform
  • Aerial Wavebounce
    • Neutral Special
      • Jump forwards or backwards.
      • Tilt the analog stick slightly in the opposite direction and input B-Special.  This will perform the turnaround B-Special.
      • Immediately smash the analog stick in the opposite direction.  This will perform the B-Reverse.
      • If executed correctly, your character will reverse momentum aerially while performing the B-Special attack facing in the original direction.
    • Side-B Special
      • Jump forwards or backwards.
      • Smash the analog stick in the opposite direction and input B-Special.  This will perform the turnaround B-Special.
      • Immediately smash the analog stick in the opposite direction.  This will perform the B-Reverse.
      • If executed correctly, your character will reverse momentum aerially while performing the B-Special attack facing in the original direction.
  • Grounded Wavebounce Neutral Special
    • See C-Bounce article
    • Standard Control Scheme
      • Dash forwards.
      • With a strict timing, tilt the analog stick very gently yet quickly in the opposite direction and press B.  This will perform the turnaround B-Special.
      • Immediately smash the analog stick in the opposite direction.  This will perform the B-Reverse.
      • If executed correctly, your character will reverse momentum on the ground while performing the neutral B-Special attack facing in the original dash direction.
Uses
  • Can use as a movement mixup option, either offensively to unexpectedly reorient an attack towards your opponent or defensively to move yourself away from your opponent and potentially reset neutral
Pros & Cons
  • Useful movement option
  • Inputs for most versions are sensitive, moderate difficulty to execute
  • Grounded wavebounce inputs extremely sensitive and strict, very difficult to execute without custom control scheme
  • Custom control schemes can make execution easier, but require non-standard control setup
