Hurtbox Shifting

Summary

When you are launched offstage, as soon as your character's hurtbox crosses the blast zone your character will be KO'ed.  Hurtbox Shifting is a technique that helps you survive longer by using a specific input option (attack, special, air dodge, jumping) to slightly shift your hurtbox away from the blast zone, thus staying within bounds.

Requirements
  • You must determine for your character which input options will helpfully shift hurtbox away and for which blast zones, as different inputs can either help or hurt your characters survivability depending on where you use them
    • Inputs that help one character might kill another (e.g., jumping helps Marth survive longer, but jumping inflates Dedede causing his hurtbox to enlarge and thus die earlier)
    • Hurtbox shifting can also help or hurt your character depending on which blast zone you're hit towards (e.g., Donkey Kong air dodging when launched to the side blast zones won't survive longer, but air dodging when launched up towards the top blast zone does)
How To Perform
  • Get launched by an opponent's strong attack towards any blast zone
  • Spam an input that shifts your hurtbox away from the blast zone
    • Jump
    • Attack
    • Special
    • Air Dodge
Uses
  • Survive longer
Pros & Cons
  • Survive longer
  • Must determine which inputs allow you to survive longer and in which blast zones it's effective
