Summary
Inputting an attack after a fast-fall resets the fall speed back to normal, effectively braking your speed in the air and cancelling the fast-fall.
Requirements
- Does not work for fast-falled free-fall (helpless) state when performing this technique, as free-fall does not allow attack inputs that could be used to brake (e.g., you can't input any attacks in a fast-fall executed during the falling portion of Mario or Roy's Up-B Special move)
- Works for most aerial and special attacks
- For attacks that temporarily interrupt the fall state (e.g., Luigi's Side-B Special move), fall speed resets to normal after the attack animation completes
- Brake will not work for attacks whose animations force a character to suddenly drop until landing on stage or self-destructing offstage (e.g., Ike or Cloud's Up-B recovery)
How To Perform
- Fast-fall in the air
- Input an attack anytime during the fast-fall
- During the attack your falling speed is slowed down and reset to normal
Uses
- Cancel a fast-fall and resume normal fall speed
- Control your aerial positioning and speed
- Multiple fast-falls and aerials can be input as needed for movement mixup
- Can bait punishable reaction out of opponent with fastfall
- Can potentially avoid incoming opponent attacks by slowing down above their reach
- Because your vertical speed is slowed, have more time to adjust horizontal positioning
Pros & Cons
- Allows you to slow down a fast fall
- Safe method to gain more aerial speed/position control
- Easy to execute
