Edge Cancel (Ledge Cancel)

Summary

The landing lag of airdodges and specials can be cancelled by landing them directly towards an edge and moving off of it.  The momentum of the landing carries the character past and over the ledge, essentially cancelling the usual lag by transitioning the character seamlessly from being on the ground to suddenly being in the air, and thereby allowing immediate input for any followup movement or attack option.

Requirements
  • You can't airdodge backwards into a ledge to edge cancel, only while moving/facing forwards.
  • Difficulty and usefulness varies for edge cancelled special moves.
How To Perform
  • Air Dodge
    • From the air, move towards a platform/stage ledge that your character is facing that they can slide off of in the same direction
    • Air dodge directly towards this ledge
    • If executed correctly, your air dodge momentum will slide you off the ledge and you can immediately convert into another movement/attack option without any air dodge landing lag
  • Special
    • From the ground or air, execute a special move and angle it towards a platform/stage ledge that your character is facing that they can slide off of in the same direction
    • If executed correctly, your special momentum will slide you off the ledge and you can immediately convert into another movement/attack option without any special move landing lag
Uses
  • Cancel air dodge and special move landing lag
  • Convert instantly into other attack/movement options, and create otherwise impossible combo strings
Pros & Cons
  • Avoid landing lag punishes
  • Useful mixup to surprise opponents
  • Creates instant openings for other attack and movement options, even string combos
  • If execution is failed can land with punishable lag, and in worst case scenario some characters can even fall to death
    • E.g, if Mewtwo attempts to edge cancel a teleport special off a stage ledge but goes too far and misses the edge for cancelling, Mewtwo will fall to his doom
